About

The Minnesota Ironman® Bicycle Ride (MIBR), established in 1967, is the longest running century bike ride in Minnesota. It is considered the Season Opener cycling event for the upper Midwest. With routes of 100, 68, 30 and 17 miles, this single day bike tour has something for every cyclist. The MIBR marks the start of the cycling season. It has been held every year since on the last Sunday in April. However, due to the Easter holiday in 2011, we moved it to May. We decided to keep the ride in May for 2012.

Over the years the ride has grown and changed. We moved the ride location, as ridership grew, from Minneapolis to Buffalo to the current home of Lakeville, MN. We have added more routes as well. We have something for all cyclists now, including 17, 30, 50, 68 and 100 miles. But one thing remains constant: the Minnesota Ironman is the spring opener bicycle event in Minnesota. It’s the original Ironman, the grandfather of midwestern bicycle events, and the qualitative measuring stick for all subsequent rides.

In case  you are wondering, this is not a triathlon. It’s not a race of any sort. It’s a recreational bike ride or cyclists of all skill levels and ambitions. Pure and simple. We pre-date the Ironman Triathlon, and have a licensing agreement with them to continue using our original name: The Minnesota Ironman® Bicycle Ride.

Any event with a 45+ year history needs to inspire itself to greater challenges and rewards for its riders. We are running the 2nd annual Minnesota Gran Fondo, a timed bike event, in 2012.  This is an event within and event. The MGF will run concurrently, same time and same routes, as the traditional Minnesota Ironman.

The MIBR has been managed since ’67 by Hostelling International USA – Minnesota Council, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit charitable organization devoted to promoting healthy recreation, international travel and cultural exchange. Our Minnesota Council was established in 1955 by a core of cyclists and travelers. We have been promoting travel and cycling ever since.

The MIBR is the single largest annual fundraiser for Hostelling International Minnesota. It is critical to achieving our mission and paying the bills. All proceeds from this event support our organization and our mission. You can find out more about our organization at our web site: www.himinnesota.org or visit our national office site here: www.hiusa.org – and book a room at a hostel while you are there! Hostelling In Minnesota

The Minnesota Council of HI-USA, based in St. Paul, is proud to operate the Mississippi Headwaters Hostel in Itasca State Park, MN. It’s a beautifully restored and modernized log lodge in the heart of Itasca – only minutes from the Mississippi Headwaters. It’s a remote and beautiful hostel, perfect for groups, family reunions, and people who want a home base while exploring Minnesota’s oldest state park.

Hostelling In The U.S.A.

But log lodges are not the only kinds of hostels in the USA. You can stay in a beautiful, modern building in downtown Chicago or Seattle. You can stay in a lighthouse just south of San Francisco. You can in an incredible brownstone on the upper westside in New York City. There are 60 hostels across the U.S. and the variety of accommodations is astounding. Some are funky, some are cozy, some are big city – yet they all have a number of things in common: cleanliness, safety, friendly staff, and common spaces for interacting with fellow travelers from all over the world.

Hostelling Around The World

Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) is part of a world wide hostelling network called the International Youth Hostel Federation, with over 4,000 hostels in 90 countries. By a measure of overnights, we are the 3rd largest accommodations provider on the planet. Hostels are for everyone, of all ages. Hostels are for people who want an accommodations experience, not just a clean room with a TV. Hostels exist so that people can get to know one another.

The International Youth Hostel Federation, founded in Germany in 1908 as an international not-for-profit charitable organization, has a mission to provide shared accommodation ”in which there will be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions, in order to promote intercultural youth exchange as an effective means for young people to learn from each other, while achieving a better understanding of culture both at home and abroad.”

Become a part of the hostelling movement today. People just like you are doing it. They are saving money; they are meeting good folks from around the world; and they are having a good time.
